Overview

Introduction

You are at a career crossroad.  You've read and heard different stories about working at early-stage startups. And the more information you have, the more confused you are.  If this describes you, let us help!

Check out this self-paced course comprising 8 modules that will equip you with the foundational knowledge, practical advice and application activities to guide you in a discovery process. This course is designed based on our experience working with thousands of talent exploring startup careers in South East Asia.

Format of course

  1. The 8 modules will be presented in 8 introductory videos, 7 slideshows (without narration) and one self-assessment. To maximise your learning experience, feel free to spend any amount of time for the self-directed content. An estimate of 5 hours is recommended to complete this course.

  2. On top of the video lectures, 3 application activities (Module 3: Stages of Start-up, Module 4: What Start-up Team looks like & Module 5: In-demand skills) are included at the end of each module to help you apply the information to your personal situation. We recommend a minimum of 1-hour for each application activity.

  3. Towards the end of the course (Module 7: Am I Suited for a Start-up?), you can do a self-assessment to determine if a startup is really a fit for you at this stage of your life and career.

You can expect the following content to be covered

  1. The Startup Landscape in Asia

The unprecedented impact of the pandemic is set to put digital technologies in the centre stage. There will be a hyper-acceleration and adoption for both consumers and Small Medium Enterprises, pushing the internet economy towards more than US$300B in 2025.

  2. Learn about what startup teams look like

Among the top 3 reasons why startups fail is that they do not have the right team. Wondering why? As a pioneer in recruitment for the SEA startup ecosystem, we have gained deep knowledge on how to assemble high performing teams for growth, what typical startup culture is like and the type of skills that individuals must possess to thrive in these companies. Learn to appreciate these unique attributes as you continue on this career discovery journey.

  3. Discover yourself

According to Steve Jobs, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do”.

How do you know if you will love the work at a startup? An important first step is to understand your skills, interest and motivations. And if they align to the needs of a startup. Want to know where you stand? Let us lead you on this process of self-discovery.

  4. Help you to choose the right startup

You have come to the end of the course and it is a hell-yeah, I am joining a startup. But wait, how do I choose which is best for me? What are the factors to evaluate against? What questions should I ask the founders? Here’s our 6 point guide with sample questions that will not only get you the answers but also impress the founders/hiring manager!

Testimonials

" I graduated in 2019 and began my career in a bank but soon found myself drawn to startups.  I did not know where to start as many of my friends had corporate careers.  This course gave me just the right amount of information to confirm my interest.  My biggest takeaway was in Module 8. The comprehensive list of factors for evaluating a startup helped me make an informed and confident decision in joining my current startup!"

I am the Founder of ConnectOne, a talent solutions company that since 2013 have partnered with early-stage tech startups to build high performing teams.

In the process, I have had the privilege to meet and coach many talented individuals like yourself in their career journey especially in exploring a transition to startups.

Prior to that, I had spent 15 years in a large corporate, Procter & Gamble before pivoting my career into startups. I pivoted not just from FMCG to Tech(industry) but also BD/Marketing to HR (function/skills).

Over the last 2 years, with the increased interest in the startup ecosystem, we have had many approaching us to find out if a startup is for them or not.

Hence my partner and I took the opportunity during the enforced lockdown this year to share our years of experience coaching individuals into a self-directed learning program like this.

I am also a certified career coach and mentor several startup communities and founders.
