What Are The Limitations of Self-directed Learning?

Living in a fast and expeditious world, when every kid hardly tries to speak or utter something is then necessitated to join a school. Believe me, this is the part of every single individual whether it’s parents who redirect their children or it’s a child who usually faces this. Learning should become a part of our lives, since the day we born we start pursuing how to speak? How to walk? And even how to learn?

While aging we start being curious about the knowledge of the world and different type of wisdom existing in it. Rather than joining a school or any other educational institute, we go for autodidacticism.

Talking about auto didacticism or also known as self-directed learning is an activity in which an individual endeavors to seek education with or without any sort of help. This help could be either from friends, teachers, or veterans. An individual following this technique is known as an autodidact or a self-taught person.

There are five steps of self-directed learning evoked below:

  1. Set Goals

Before starting your exertion at any work you need to set your goals in order to achieve something you desire for. Setting goals is a manner to know your determination.

  1. Create a plan

Creating a plan is one of the most necessary tasks before kicking off. As for example, it helps you determine in which direction, speed or with how much potential you are going to run.

  1. Monitor learning

While achieving your goals you need to monitor your accomplishments to get some know-how about where are you standing right now? Are you on a right track or not?

  1. Seek help when needed

Whenever you think that your brain is being addled you can ask for help from either your friends or mentor. This would be highly encouraging for you.

  1. Reflect on the process

After almost achieving your goal take a look back at your plan or road map. Think about, is this what you desired? Is this what want to achieve? Did you achieve what you planned or not yet?

Limitations of Self-directed Learning

Taking in the notice the achievements and goals you procured through self-directed learning there are always some limitations of it as well.  Working solely would be easy for someone as it is cheap and free, he or she sets his or her own pace, no specific time required and you can even get better at doing it.

Unfortunately, everything in this world is not just advantageous for everyone there are several disadvantages of it as well. Similarly, besides some advantages of the self-directed learning method, there are several limitations or disadvantages of self-directed learning which an autodidact usually faces.

Some of the limitations of self-directed learning are:

  • No Self-Discipline

While talking about self-directed learning if you have not set your goals then how could you think of achieving those?

Facing a no self-discipline might get you some weaknesses of unnecessary and false temptations.

You could not be able to execute your plans properly because people usually run from the hard, uncomfortable things. They would prefer to do easy, comfortable, and familiar things and run to distractions.

  • No face to face interaction

Some might face a lack of self-confidence when it comes to face-to-face interaction with others. Would those achievements be meaningful when you can’t share or explain your ideas with someone else because of a lack of confidence?

The respect from people which you usually tend will start fading out as if they would not be able to understand your course. Many students choose the e-learning method when they can go out due to the pandemic of COVID. You can choose the best online learning websites to help you easily interact with their teacher at your home.

  • No one for correction

One of another major con of self-directed learning is there would not be anyone who might keep a check on you of what are you studying or are you on a right track or not?
Tutors play an important role because they know the way to help you learn in the right way. It will take more time in achieving something as compared to that with the help of someone.

There may be difficulty in evaluating your progress. The social links like friends or contacts that you get when you go for classes will not be there

  • Decrease in productivity

If you start doing self-directed learning full time, in order to avoid going insane you have to remember to leave the house at least once in a while. This might result in decreasing your productivity.

A perfect workplace is required to get the best out of you as far as expanding your profitability.

  • Inadequate writing skills

Another one of the major barriers in self-learning is facing deficiencies in writing skills. Reading all the time through different sources would not help your brain think freely and generate ideas on its own.

Talking about writing skills, speed and accuracy are also very much important. In order to express yourself in virtual debates and forum discussions, you should be able to express yourself well or write well.
