Tips to Engage Students in Your Online Course amid Covid-19 Pandemic

Research has shown students learn better when they are actively engaged in learning rather than just listening to a lecture. Over the past three years, our team of faculty and teaching assistants at the National University of Singapore has successfully created an extensive underclass course that is attractive to our students, who are eager to participate actively in the class based on some reasons make students don't show up for the virtual course

When we moved our class to teach online thoroughly, we learned a lot of lessons on how to avoid losing student engagements that we've worked so hard to develop.
Most teachers will agree that student involvement is vital to a top-quality learning experience, especially, E-Learning plays an important role during Covid-19.  Here are some ideas for enhancing and ensuring advanced student participation in online courses:

Talk to Students while Working

Whether it's commenting on a document like it was prepared online, reading in a chat room, or acknowledging students in a live session, travel with them. This environment is very conducive to the constructive role of a "one-way leader". Let them know that not only are they looking at you, but you are looking at them.

Ask Questions

Have online office hours and encourage students to come and ask their questions. The barrier to admission is less than coming to your physical office, and it's an excellent way for faculty members to build relationships with students.

Highlight Students Individual Experiences

Unlike physical classrooms, students live different lives in different places. Please encourage them to share experiences separately and help them tap into their work.

For those of you who are attracted to online education for the first time, we should share another secret: the separate engagements and bonds we create online do not only enhance the student experience. They also breathe new life into the teaching experience.

Mix it Up

In class, think about what you teach in small "parts" - micro-lectures, with quiet activities and group work.

Use your students' discovery, editing, and creativity

When you plan an assignment, think about what students do best in a digital environment and build your work around these skills and behaviors. Online, students quickly move from users to content producers, and sharing is easy. Create activities that encourage them to co-create and peer review. Students need to create or improve wiki pages on crucial topics.

Plan regular Checkpoints with Direct Feedback from Students

Formal, real-time feedback from students provides valuable insights into their feedback and helps us understand the grip of their content.

These direct responses enable us to adapt the following lessons to the level of understanding of students' concepts and to keep them engaged. For example, these unannounced checkpoints can be in the form of short, unclassified questions and polls.

We use pools everywhere, but occasionally use other interactive platforms such as Mentimer, Kahut, Padlet, and Pigeon Hole when we need different features for our outposts.

Gamify with Badges and Certificates

You can incorporate gambling elements into an online course without having to go through the process of building a full game-based learning course from start to finish. As another intermediate step, consider adding badges to your practice to recognize student accomplishments along the way. The badges that are awarded based on the acquisition of specific qualifications can be presented as a way to reward student performance and encourage continued engagement.

Communicate in Various Forms

Online education provides instructors with a spread of the way to speak with students. Course email and discussion forums are standard communication tools but don't ignore embedded audio and video, chat rooms or instant messaging, broadcast text messaging, and homepage announcements. Entertainment screencast videos are well-received by students and are increasingly easy and cheap to make.

Make Learning Social

Many instructors are looking at social media as a way to spice up their courses and engage students in contextual learning. If social platforms are used effectively, they can help create a sense of classroom community among students and between students and instructors.

Improve Access to Courses for Everyone

It is not the last type to be considered when talking about the importance of student engagement. However, student engagement can be reduced for all when the course material is provided in a way that makes access to the web difficult. Regardless of whether a student relies on assistive technology or not, having course materials does not hinder learning, there is a constant need for students in online learning. It is a good practice for teachers to be engaged on a regular, regular basis, to take small steps to improve access to the curriculum.
