Learning A Language: Useful Things I Wish I Knew

Posted by: Omer Boyle Jr. at 05/06/2023 205 views

While beginning to learn a language the first question that came to my mind was what do I want to achieve and when. According to Notion, learning a language is best when split into effortless goals which are attainable over a few months and are far more motivating and pragmatic. Learning a language can be hard but there are different ways to make it easier.

While traveling to France, I have no idea how to communicate in French. I kept on asking for directions or other things that might be useful at that time assuming that everyone could speak English only because it’s the most common language being spoken throughout the world. But it was being difficult to find any individual who can speak English. So in order to communicate with locals, I was forced to learn French.

Since then I have learned that to learn any new language the best way is to make meaningful friendships with anyone on the planet. According to the words of Nelson Mandela "Talking to a man in a language that he understands goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language goes to his heart”. Below is the compilation of lessons from useful things while learning a language that I wish I knew earlier.

To become conversationally fluent in multiple languages these insights helped me and I was able to make friends with people around the globe. I hope this helps you in the same manner too.

There is No Exact Way of Learning A Language

Learning French in high school was boredom where teachers were incessantly hastening the course to pass an upcoming exam. While learning a language in my spare time, I started noticing that a variety of techniques and methods works like watching movies with music and subtitles or learning the most frequently used words in daily conversation.

It is very important to remember that there is no definite technique for learning a language. Take your time to experiment with numerous learning methods and see for yourself what works best for you.

Practice Everyday to Learn

To become fluent in your conversation making a schedule plays an important role. Make a habit of learning something each day and implement it into your schedule. Try not to force yourself to learn a new language. It might lead to deferment.

To make continual progress in learning a language, I have found that daily routine is the best practice rather than learning a language on Duo Lingo or listening to music.

Communicating with Different People Will Promote Your Progress

Learning a new language all by yourself can be a bit challenging as you will be unable to communicate or speak to different individuals to make your pronunciation better.

If you are unable to find people or family members that are bi-lingual then a better way to improve your confidence to learn a new language is to meet up within the local city. It’s very important to have a regular conversation with different people to become fluent if you visit another country that speaks your desired language.

Making Mistakes While Learning A Language

While learning a new language the thought that made me afraid was the efforts to find the answer to a question. Honestly, I was afraid of being judged for not speaking fluently as I was not a native speaker but I kept on making progress, and a majority of the people started respecting my struggles to communicate frequently in their native language.

It is very important to remind yourself that mistakes happen while learning a new language till we learn what we are capable of accomplishing.

Conclusion:

Remember, learning a new language can be a challenging experience but with a willingness to make mistakes, to put effort and practice every day soon we will be able to discover that we are capable of achieving a lot more than we have ever imagined. The most important thing about learning a new language is consistency and starting slow and working your way towards more difficult and harder forms to achieve goals.

Just like everything, learning a language should be a fun experience that will help you start with something easy and basic in order to reach better results. This will eventually help you speak the language fluently. To remain consistent in your learning journey keep rewarding yourself every time milestone is achieved. This will help you keep motivated to keep trying.  Initially, you can watch a movie in the same language you are learning with or without subtitles or you can try some local treats of the country the language of which you are trying to learn like their flag or special dishes.

For future and bigger rewards, you may consider a trip to that country after you have completed studying for this language.
