The UPSC IES (Indian Defence Service of Engineers) for Indian railways and border road engineers is conducted for aspirants looking forward to making a career in engineering. The Union Public Service Commission every year conducts different types of entrance exams, including Civil Service Examinations, NDA, etc. Once the candidate cleared UPSC IES exam, he/she is then be posted in different organizations including Indian Railways, Defence and others. The candidate would be joining as a junior level designated as the Executive Engineer or Assistant Director. Once the employee gets the experience of 3-4 yrs., they are then promoted to engineer, director or working manager. Once the candidate completes 8 years of experience, they then become deputy general manager or work as the joint director.

After completing 20 years of work experience, the employee will be promoted to chief engineer or additional general manager. An employee with an excellent record of accomplishment and experience will be able to reach the chairman or MD level position.

IES officer salary details

The salary scale of the IES officer is as same as other employees. However, it increases as the position increases. In the junior level, the pay scale will be approx. Rs 15600/- pm with the grade pay of Rs 5400/-. Similarly, the senior scale position will remain the same, but with the grade pay of Rs 6600/. As the position of the employee raises the salary can go up to Rs 80,000/-pm but with no grade pay.

The UPSC/IES exam is conducted in three different phases-

Stage 1 is the preliminary exam having objective type papers. Candidates successfully passing stage 1 can get into stage 2. Stage 3 will be of a personality test. Questions in both stage 1 and stage 2 will come from subjects of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and telecommunication. The stage 1 and stage 2 exam will consist of total marks of 500 and 600 respectively.
