Being Productive While Studying Online

Posted by: Camille Beahan at 28/02/2021 1,695 views

To curb the spread of COVID-19, schools across different nations have closed down, and students now have to stay at home and continue their studies online. While this isn’t the start of online studying, it has become even more rampant now. Although it has many advantages, it can be the perfect recipe for ineffectiveness and unproductiveness if you don't properly manage your research skills. You could be indoors all day feeling like you are doing many things, then you discover that you’ve done just next to nothing. Then, your backlogs of work to do start to grow.

However, that isn’t always the case, and it shouldn’t be. You can study online from whatever location you are in and be productive at it. If you don’t know how-to, here are a few tips to help you.

Have a daily routine to follow

Creating a strict routine for yourself that you stick to and are consistent with is the bedrock for being productive while studying online. It would be best if you made a calendar for yourself with a schedule of what to do at particular times and develop the discipline to stick to your schedule. Combine this with a list of things you plan to achieve every day and see how it works out.

Take all distractions away from you.

A major distraction to your online studies is your mobile phone. All those little beeps and buzzes that accompany things like text messages and notifications can significantly distract you. Apart from calling your attention from something else that isn’t your studies, once you open it, you could be far gone in the distraction to remember that you have spent the last 30 minutes of your “online study” following an argument on Twitter.

The background noise from the television is something else you also have to avoid if you want to focus 100%. Your internet browser should only have tabs related to your studies open, so you aren’t tempted to switch to something else in a second.

Music can help you stay on track.

Studies show that music allows us to improve our quality of work and reduce the amount of time spent on a task as we can concentrate better. So, music can help improve one’s productivity. With the right playlist, you will be able to study well and get into the flow state without getting distracted by the music. This is even more effective if there are no lyrics to the music, just the sounds, and instrumentals. You could lose track of time and do so much more than you even planned.

Have your designated study area

You must set up an area in your house where you consider your study area. This will go a long way in helping you boost your productivity levels. You can’t stay on your bed and expect to be focused while studying. You need to send some form of signal to your brain that you are about to study, and that’s what you get with a designated study area.

If you have a room in your home that is empty or free, or there’s an open space in your room that you could set up for yourself, it will go a long way for you. Try to avoid studying anywhere near your bed or a couch. Your brain is conditioned to feel relaxed in such spots. However, you can recondition it for studying by creating a study area for yourself.

Take notes down

This isn’t one of those times when you use your smartphone or tablet to take down notes. That’s some distraction on its own. You have to take down notes the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper. This will help you focus even better. It’s easy to neglect taking notes since you can always watch the videos on your computer, and you have the option to rewind at any time. Taking notes by hand allows you to think through what you are learning as you make your notes. This helps you to understand the subject better. This also aids your retention of the topic.

Take breaks in-between

According to an assignment help report, taking regular breaks in-between studies helps your retention of the subject and increases your productivity. It also ensures that you are more alert while working.

When you work for up to 75 or 90 minutes, you use the brain's two modes: focusing (learning) and consolidation. By taking a break of 15 minutes in-between work, you will help your brain to consolidate the information it has received and aid retention.

Conclusion

The tips discussed in this article are some of those tested and trusted methods to help boost productivity and aid retention while studying online. So, if you are struggling with your online studies, try out all of these techniques to increase your productivity. It would help if you also tried to stay in touch and continuously communicate with your online classmates. This can help you in many ways. If anything, collaboration enables you to be more serious and more productive.
