5 Ways Universities And Students Are Effectively Using Virtual Reality

Posted by: Bernita Ritchie II at 21/04/2021 2,469 views

There has been much talk about virtual reality technology in the last few years. While it has been used in the industries and has changed the outlook of things, it has taken a while before being implemented in the education sector. This might be because it is an expensive technology to implement. However, it is here now, and there's no going back.

This new immersive technology has changed many things that we’ve been used to traditionally. The educational dynamics that we know are experiencing a shift due to the introduction of this technology and are opening up education to a new world of possibilities. As we know it, education has taken several steps forward with the combined share of virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.

Rather than going out to explore the world, the world is coming to you right in your classroom. It's an immersive technology like you’ve never seen before. Many institutions have already implemented this technology to create an immersive, exploration, and interactive learning environment for their students.

Here are five different ways that universities and students use this technology.

1. Virtual field trips

Field trips are a common feature in the university setting, especially for some particular courses. The introduction of virtual reality means that these field trips will be reduced. These field trips are held virtually rather than having to travel for days. Google Expedition can be used to take the students to places as far as they want to go.

The app Google Expedition is an exciting app that you do download for free on Android or IOS. Both students and teachers can get some cardboard headsets that they would connect to their smartphones and explore.

2. Theatre students stagecraft

This is another honorable way that universities have put this technology to use. In this usage, theatre students can visualize the design of the stage before their productions. The integrated technology department of the university is already building an AR spacecraft. This will be an app on iPads and loads and would provide an immersive and interactive experience even on empty stages.

This university is also working on creating theater sets that can be imported to the app so that users can experience walking through the set stage before the construction even starts.

3. Distance learning

According to popular assignment writing, this is the most common use of virtual reality in education. The good thing is, there is an endless list of opportunities that this technology adds to remote learning. Some of the common problems people had with distance learning bothered around an inability to interact appropriately with the lecturers.

However, this is a problem that has been completely erased by virtual reality. VR helps distance learning students improve their online learning experience. Many universities are embracing this and are setting apart courses with VR programs for their remote students.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown skyrocketed the need for such a technology as VR. While everyone keeps social distance and goes into lockdown, VR becomes the savior for students to continue learning in an interactive and immersive environment.

4. Training

With VR technology’s introduction, students have an even safer means to continue to learn within very realistic situations. This removes the fear in people’s minds to do a strange thing that probably has real-life consequences. With VR, students can experiment within realistic and controlled scenarios. This allows them to practice and improve their skills, giving them a higher chance of success.

One part of university education that will most benefit from this is medical education because the students will be able to go through surgical procedures and anatomy easily with the right guidance. According to research, students taught with just how-to videos didn't learn as fast as those who got their training through virtual reality.

5. Language immersion

One of the ideal ways to do this is by full immersion when it comes to learning a new language. This requires that the students listen to the language and speak it throughout the day, every day. This is ideal, given that we can’t just migrate to other countries for months. The simulations in virtual reality can trick the brain, making it see it as a real-life experience. There are now so many language learning apps that are created to be compatible with virtual reality.

Conclusion

Virtual reality is indeed a whole new reality. It is an immersive, engaging, and interactive technology that is used across different industries. The education sector isn’t left out, with various universities and students using it in multiple ways to advance education and learning.
